Project: S.T.E.A.M at New Town Elementary meets the Arts and Culture and STEM goals for the State of Maryland. This will be our 5th year serving grades 3 through 5. The Art and Technology program will run from August to June of the 2013- 2014 school year. We will use Scratch, Maxon Cinema 4D (sponsor), HTML, Java Script, and Photography.
Scratch is a program developed by MIT ( Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Scratch simplifies the mechanics of programming by using blocks which eliminates the frustration of syntax errors. Scratch is a versatile program which allows for exploration in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (S.T.E.A.M). This year we will extend the students Scratch programming skills into Robotics using Legos' We-Do Kits. The students will also design interactive stories, games, and music. The Art and Technology Program at New Town Elementary teaches and encourages students to creatively solve problems in a broad spectrum of interactive and design media using Boolean Logic, Conditional Statements, 2D Coordinates, Angles, Random Numbers, and Variables. The students will learn about the "Artist/ Creative Process" to design interactive media, facilitate problem solving and collaboration among the students.
MAXON Cinema 4d sponsors our program and is a leading developer of 3D software for the creative industries, best known for Its flagship 3D modeling, painting, rendering, and animation software, CINEMA 4D. Today, thousands of users across the world rely on CINEMA 4D to create cutting-edge 3D motion graphics, architectural and product visualizations, video game graphics, illustrations, and much more. The Artist Process consists of:
Step 1 Plan and Practice—questions, discussions, thumbnails and prelims
Step 2 Begin to Create—sketching, arranging, designing and assembling
Step 3 Revise—re-work, move and remove, improve
Step 4 Add Finishing Touches—details, presentation, accession information
Step 5 Share and Reflect—exhibit, add to portfolio, self-assess
Once the students have completed The Art and Technology Program at New Town Elementary they will have designed:
- Interactive Dance and Music Project inspired by the Art of Ernie Barnes
- Interactive Programming for interactions with Lego sculptures using motion, distance sensors and motors.
- An original video game design with rules , time, and scores.
- Collaborative Project with a chosen theme which exhibits the learned skills of The Arts and Technology Program at New Town Elementary for individual portfolios and sharing on the Internet.
